Living with a painting

Thinking about scale, breathing room, and the light that changes a room.

Give the work breathing room

Scale is a relationship between the painting, the wall, and the things around it. A quieter arrangement can let a small work hold attention, while a larger composition may ask for more space around its edges.

Look at the light you have

A room changes through the day. Consider the atmosphere around an artwork rather than judging a palette from a single screen image. For real art, follow the artist or conservator’s specific care guidance.

Begin with what you return to

An imagined collection is a chance to notice your own preferences: a certain color, a kind of mark, a feeling of openness. The studio shortlist lets you save works as a starting point for a creative brief.
